Longwoods Alpaca Farm, LLC is a small family farm located in Cumberland, Maine, 15 minutes north of Portland. We are dedicated to breeding genetically sound livestock, and we are excited to be part of the thriving fiber industry in association with local mini-mills, and the North American Alpaca Fiber Producers Coop, (www.naafp.us).

The Huacaya females featured on these pages are the foundation of our herd. Their crias’ forbears include such venerable studs as Poseidon, Altiplano Gold, Victor, and Hemingway. We will grow our herd to 10 breeding females over the next few years. With an eye on the current domestic cottage and future commercial fiber industries, our primary goal is to breed alpacas for dense fleeces with micron counts under 25, 97% of which should be less than 30 microns. Sound conformation, gentle dispositions and easier handling using CAMELIDynamics will assure our clients, especially those new to the industry, that our alpacas are indeed the perfect addition to their herds.

Are alpacas right for you? Consider the farming lifestyle, business opportunities, and tax advantages. You'll find more practical information and ideas online than you can imagine, but it's the farm visits that really fan the flame!

Seminars, shows, and auctions allow access to hundreds of alpacas and their proud owners, all under one roof. Most new alpaca breeders are also new to raising livestock. There is a steep learning curve. We are indebted to our many mentors for providing us a realistic picture of what is involved in creating and maintaining a successful alpaca breeding and fiber business. We offer the same generous support to our clients for as long as it is needed.

Feel free to contact us if you have questions about getting started in the alpaca business or to schedule a farm visit to see an alpaca farm-in-progress.

You are also invited to stop by our booth at the Cumberland Farmers Market ( www.cumberlandfarmersmarket.org) from mid May through late October.
